Day 1: Jackson, WY to Yellowstone- Wildlife and Waterfalls! to Cody, WY
We pick you up from your Jackson or Teton Village lodging and begin our adventure traveling through Grand Teton National Park– stopping for wildlife encounters, enjoying spectacular Teton mountains, glaciers, rivers and wild tales of fur trappers, mountain men and exploring historical sites. We only have time for a taste of the Tetons; many guests add an extra tour day to explore just Grand Teton National Park. We’re on to Yellowstone! The world’s first national park founded in 1872. We’ll explore the amazing geo-thermals, the spectacular Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with Upper (97 ft) and Lower (308 ft) waterfalls. Tasty lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day. Afternoon, we make our way along the shores of Yellowstone Lake over Sylvan Pass down to Cody Wyoming, founded by Frontier Scout and Showman Buffalo Bill Cody. Evening possible Rodeo.
Day 1 Lodging: Cody, WY gateway town: rustic lodges and hotel options.
Day 2: Cowboys, Indians & The Rooftop of the World
We spend the morning at the world-famous Buffalo Bill Cody Center of the West, seeing some of the best Yellowstone-inspired artwork, cowboy life and Native American culture. Tasty lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day. After lunch we’re off to the towering Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains in NE Yellowstone country, incredible glacier-carved peaks, covered in wildflowers and wild animals. We will cross the Chief Joseph Divide, stopping to learn of the great skills the Native American Indians, prospect mining and mountain men trappers. By evening, we’ll be settling into a quiet mountain mining town next to the famous Lamar River Valley. This is where wolves were reintroduced in 1995, and home to abundant antelope, bear, elk and where the Buffalo DO roam.
Day 2 Lodging: Cooke City or Silvergate, MT gateway town: rustic lodges and hotel options.
Day 3: Yellowstone Upper Loop- Wildlife Safari in the Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs & Fort Yellowstone
Sunrise wildlife safari morning in the Lamar Valley “The American Serengeti,” one of the best places in the world to spot, track and experience wild predators–wolves & bears–to see if they were successful in catching dinner (antelope, elk and bison). The day will also include interpretive hikes exploring classic park features such as Mammoth Hot Springs, Fort Yellowstone, Tower Falls, and/or longer hikes like Slough Creek, Specimen Ridge, Petrified Forest or Dunraven Pass, depending on current weather conditions and group interest. Tasty lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day. The afternoon can be spent exploring this wild region’s abundant wildlife or a hike off the beaten path.
Day 3 Lodging: Inside Yellowstone Park or gateway town: rustic lodges and hotel options.
Day 4: Lower Loop of Yellowstone: Exploring the Supervolcano!
Now it’s time to see Old Faithful Geyser and some of the 10,000 geo-thermals! Yellowstone national park is a huge active volcano, creating the highest concentration of geysers in the world. Guided exploration into the geyser basins, with hot springs, mudpots, geysers and fumaroles will give you a powerful understanding and up-close connection to Mother Nature. The geology, microbiology and volcanology of these fascinating ancient structures help to create the complex global environment of today. Tasty lunch and healthy snacks throughout the day. By afternoon, we turn the wagons back over The Continental Divide south toward Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole. The tour is not yet over… wildlife and sunset vistas with the Teton backdrop await a great finish to our fun adventure together. More About Lodging
There is a wide variety of accommodations in the Yellowstone region. Buffalo Roam will arrange lodging for you and your guide. Booking early ensures the best lodging options & locations. Most lodges inside the park are sold out a year in advance. However, there are several wonderful “gateway” communities on the park border where we love to stay which have availability throughout the high summer season and are close to unique areas of the Greater Yellowstone. Most accommodations in and around the park are what we call “Western rustic” charming little hotels, lodges or cabins; perhaps with fewer amenities but in a beautiful location!
Since lodging costs vary greatly depending on location, availability and your comfort level, we separate your tour cost and lodging cost. This allows you more options and typically we reserve the rooms directly on your credit card so that you are not paying any extra fees for lodging! Cost varies from $200 – $450 per room per night ( 2 Queen bed with bath ); we work with your budget and desired level of accommodation in booking lodging. Your lodging cost includes lodging for your guide, and we always search for a more economical option for your guide.
Your Yellowstone Trip is a Tour of a Lifetime
We at Buffalo Roam know that Yellowstone is a trip of a lifetime and we will strive to make it the most enjoyable and memorable. Throughout the adventure, you will experience and connect to this wild beautiful national park landscape. Your experienced naturalist guide will share fun lessons on wildlife behavior, the Super Volcano creation, human land use, park history, the natural environment, microbiology “extremophiles” and much more. We impart a solid enjoyment to the wild wonders of nature. While on tour, we practice bear country safety techniques, “Leave No Trace” principles to outdoor travel and proper behavior in the presence of all wildlife and within a national park.
The exact routes and itineraries will depend on a number of factors – the most important being lodging location. Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks cover a large, wild area of over 2.5 million acres! One of the great things about private tours is that our experienced guides customize each adventure, making informed suggestions to calibrate each day to your interests, expectations, experience level, the best wildlife options, weather and desired length of hikes.
We strive to provide a fun, safe, memorable national park experience at any given time of year. We look forward to connecting you to the wonders of wild places!
